Product Description
The difference is clear. PPG Industries, leaders in glass technology, originally developed this patented hydrophobic glass treatment formula for the aviation industry. Now available for the automotive industry, the formula used in Aquapel Glass Treatment is applied to the exterior of vehicle glass, leaving the windshield and other treated glass surfaces water resistant. Rain beads up and rolls off to dramatically improve a driver’s vision in rain, day and night. Aqu… More >>

I have been a faithful Rain-X user for a long time. For me, Rain-X lasts about 4-6 weeks before another application. Aquapel claims it lasts up to 6 times longer than other products so I thought I’d be getting Rain-X on steroids.
WRONG! Aquapel is a vastly inferior product when compared to Rain-X. I felt Aquapel is fair at best as far as water removal. I’d describe it as the final 4-6 weeks of a Rain-X treatment, when you know it’s getting weak and time to re-apply. It does have an easy application going for it, so I gave it 2 stars. But it’s very toxic (harmful or fatal) compared to Rain-X.
Do yourself a favor. If you’ve never used either product, hands down go with Rain-X. It’s a little harder to apply and you have to do it more often, but the alternative (Aquapel) is not worth it.

I’ve updated this review but can’t drop my rating to 2 stars.
I’ve used RainX for years. It’s cheap and easy to apply and sort of works. Aquapel is slightly better at first but after 3 rainstorms it seems used up. I had a professional detailer put it on, so I know it was done correctly. It was good for the first couple of rainstorms, which is when I wrote my review. But now a storm or two later and it’s on par with RainX which is a lot cheaper. True this stuff doesn’t streak anywhere near as much as RainX.
Also I washed my car at a local car wash and that seems to have diminished the Aquapel even further. I’ve washed my car with RainX there many times and it’s ok but this stuff seems to come off much more easily.
Overall I wouldn’t buy Aquapel again. I have enough to last a long time as it is but I wouldn’t buy it again. After just a few rainstorms, I would lower my rating to a 2 instead of a 5. Amazon doesn’t let you change your rating. I’d rate it 2 instead of a 1 because it doesn’t smear like RainX.
I’ve heard of wiper blades that are supposed to be better than RainX so I will try those out for this winter. We looked at the new Nanotech stuff but it’s too expensive right now.
My suggestion is either buy the expensive nanotech stuff or use RainX. The Aquapel isn’t worth the effort to put it on.

This is a great product. We used it on an all glass shower and could not be happier about the results.

Summary:
-Aquapel goes on easily with a one use applicator
-It effectively functions for me about 6-8 months (Wisconsin)
–Beads rain off the windshield w/out the use of wipers at highway speeds (45+ mph)
-Makes scrapping ice and bugs off the windshield a little easier
-One applicator treats a windshield (front or back) and 2 side windows (I use 2 applicators/car)
I’ve used Aquapel for about 10 years, STP Vision Blade before that, and before that Rain-X. While all are good products, I like that Aquapel last a very long time and dries clearly. Aquapel is a polymer based treatment and Rain-X is silicon based. I like Vision Blade a bit better for application but they stopped making it years ago. I think Rain-X sheets rain off my windshield a bit more effectively than Aquapel during the first few days to a week after application but then diminishes after that; Aquapel fully functions about half a year.
For those who haven’t used a car window treatment, like Aquapel or Rain-X, it makes a HUGE difference in visibility. The “before and after” pictures they use to advertise the products are realistic.
One note about applying Aquapel: your windshield HAS to be clean. I applied Aquapel on a friend’s car, who normally uses Rain-X, and we found that the Aquapel didn’t bond well to the windshield and was therefore not very effective. If you have a silicon based rain treatment on your windshield, strip it off before applying Aquapel.

I guess it would be ok if you don’t use your wipers, but this stuff made my the wipers chatter. I followed the directions and even scrub my windshield with softscrub so that it would be super clean. Yes water does bead up, but this stuff seems to create more drag on the wiper blades. I spent two hours taking it off with barkeeper’s friend and a blue no scratch pad. I know it is not as cool, but a clean windshield and new wiper blades is all you need.
